Why Dogs Seem Better for the Dog Trainer Than Their Owner

“Why does my dog act so much better for you than they do for me?”

It happens all the time. Many of the dogs that come through our training programs also board with us when their families are traveling or busy. When owners drop them off, they’ll usually say, “Here are the things we’ve been struggling with.” Yet once that leash is in my hand—or once the dog settles into my home—those same behaviors rarely appear.

Most people laugh when I tell them, “It’s a vibe.” But the truth is, it’s not just a vibe. There’s a real reason behind it.

Structure Matters

In our household, structure is the norm. Dogs aren’t left to guess at what’s expected of them. Every interaction has clarity, consistency, and follow-through. That means when I ask a dog to do something, I guide them to success—whether it’s with a food lure, leash pressure, a remote collar, or even body language.

I don’t issue a command unless I know I can help the dog complete it. That reliability builds trust and prevents confusion. Dogs quickly learn that communication here is straightforward, predictable, and fair.

The Power of Consistency

The biggest difference between my home and most families’ homes is consistency. As trainers, my husband and I can follow through 24/7. We live the training system every single day. That’s not because we’re superhuman—it’s because it’s our job, and it’s built into our lifestyle.

Most households can’t realistically maintain that level of constant structure. Life happens—kids need attention, work deadlines pile up, and daily routines aren’t always predictable. When communication with a dog becomes inconsistent, it’s only natural for old habits and struggles to creep back in.

No Secret—Just Clear Communication

So, is there some magical secret that dog trainers know? Not really. The “secret” is that we don’t let things slide. We don’t ask for something unless we can enforce it, and we always follow through.

Hazel is a graduate of our Puppy Kickstart program and a frequent boarder here. She's always the best girl when she board with me.

That kind of clarity and consistency is what helps dogs thrive. When they come into a trainer’s home, they quickly realize that the rules aren’t optional—and that actually makes them feel calmer, safer, and more willing to listen.

What This Means for Owners

If you feel like your dog listens to the trainer better than to you, don’t get discouraged. That doesn’t mean your dog can’t succeed with you. It means that your dog is responding to consistency and clear communication—and with practice, you can create the same results at home.

The key is not perfection, but persistence. Even small improvements in your consistency will make a big difference. Over time, your dog will learn that your words carry the same weight, the same follow-through, and the same structure as they experienced in training.

👉 Takeaway: Your dog doesn’t need a new trainer—they need you to become their trainer at home. And with the right tools, guidance, and follow-through, you’ll see the same good behavior that shows up at our house.
